A perfect day in Eguisheim: Storybook streets, vineyards and Alsatian charm

My first taste of the Alsace region of France was when I visited the Strasbourg Christmas market in 2023. I was still living in Korea at the time, and wanted nothing more than to immerse myself in all things Christmas. Mission accomplished. Fast forward a few years, and we find ourselves living in Stuttgart, Germany, just a few hours' drive from this region. Whenever I have a free day, I take advantage and hop in the car, camera in hand, to spend a few hours exploring the small villages throughout the Alsace region.

Exploring Eguisheim

Eguisheim had been on my list of places to visit since we moved to Germany over a year ago. On a whim this past weekend, we decided to make the drive on a Sunday since the rain was not letting up here in Stuttgart. We lucked out with a clear window when we visited with very mild temperatures, which made for a fantastic few hours of exploring.

Ranked as one of the most beautiful villages in France since 2003, this medieval village delivers on the charm and fairy-tale vibes. As we visited in the summer, the flowers were at their most vibrant, adding to the already picturesque enchantment of the village filled with colorful half-timbered homes. Eguisheim is often called "the birthplace of the Alsatian vineyard", famous for white wine varieties such as Riesling and Gewürztraminer.

Things to Do

The town is relatively small, and you can see everything on foot in just a few hours.

  • Saint-Léon Square: Home of the central fountain and several restaurants. It also houses the ruins of Eguisheim Castle.

  • Chapelle Saint-Léon IX

  • Three Castles of Eguisheim: If you are traveling by car, you can make the drive out and hike the Three Castles of Eguisheim, which are the ruins of three castles, Dagsbourg, Weckmund, and Wahlenbourg Castles. From town, the walk will take a little over an hour. The reward for the hike is panoramic views of the vineyards below.

  • Wine Tasting at one of the local wineries. Top favorites include Wolfberger, Domaine Emile Beyer, Domaine Joseph Gruss & Son, and Wines of Alsace Eguisheim House Léon Baur. Make reservations in advance, though some accept walk-ins for tastings.

  • Stroll the town slowly, taking in the beautiful charm of the village

Where to Eat

  • Restaurant A. Edel: Located next to the fountain in Saint Leon square, this is a great spot to grab an aperitif and a quick bite in the heart of the village.

  • Caveau d'Eguisheim

  • L'Atelier de Béné

  • Au Vieux Porche and Le Pavillion Gourmand, both Michelin-rated and listed on the Michelin Guide

Grab Sweets at Maison Alsacienne De Biscuiterie

We grabbed some maracons on the way out (when in France), and the lovely ladies working gave our kids free cookies; they were ecstatic.

Saint Leon Square, Eguisheim

Since the town is relatively small, it would best be paired with a visit to Colmar, or nearby Riquewihr, especially if you are traveling by car. If you visit during the winter, Eguisheim hosts their Christmas market this year (2025) from November 28 to December 23, and again from December 27 to 30, 2025. I can't wait to return this Christmas to enjoy the market!

Getting There

Parking: We used Parking de la Mairie-it was just €4 for the entire day.

Public Transport: There's no direct train to Eguisheim. From Colmar, you can catch bus Line R030 (Colmar – Eguisheim – Rouffach).

Passports & Documents: A random border check is in place coming from the France side back into Germany. Make sure you have your passports, documents, or residency cards on hand in case you are selected for a check.
