11 best Christmas markets to visit near Stuttgart in 2025
Christmas in Europe is one of the most magical times. You can find many Christmas markets throughout Europe during the holidays, but Germany, Austria, and France do it the best (in my opinion). Stuttgart is an excellent base for many of the markets, and I am sharing eleven Christmas markets within two and a half hours of Stuttgart that are worth visiting.
1) Esslingen, Germany
Esslingen is one of my top recommendations for markets not to be missed. Located just thirty minutes from Stuttgart, this festive market has both traditional and medieval sides. With over 180 booths, you can select the perfect Christmas gift or find your yearly Christmas tree ornament. The 2025 Esslingen Christmas Market will be held from November 25 to December 22, open seven days a week at 11:00.

Located just twenty minutes from Stuttgart, Ludwigsburg is a great market located in the heart of the Marktplatz. You can pair a visit to the Christmas market with a tour of the Ludwigsburg Palace. The Ludwigsburg Christmas market will be open from November 26 to December 22, 2025.

4) Heidelberg, Germany
Heidelberg is beautiful year-round but even more charming during the holiday season. Their market is set below the towering castle on the hill and even has a small ice-skating rink. Not only can you browse the Christmas booths, but there is also an abundance of local shops, and the Heidelberg Castle is not to be missed. The Heidelberg Christmas market will run from November 24 to December 22, 2025.

5) Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the most visited medieval German cities. The entire city is decorated at Christmas, and live trees line the storefronts. The Christmas Market in Rothenburg ob der Tauber will run from November 21 to December 23, 2025.
6) Würzburg, Germany
The Würzburg Christmas market is a smaller affair but with plenty of charm. With booths set up around Marienkapelle (Mary's Chapel), this historic church accentuates the festive booths below. The Würzburg Christmas market will run from November 28 to December 23, 2025.
Wurzburg Christmas Market
7) Rüdesheim, Germany
The Rüdesheim Christmas Market of Nations was another favorite from 2024. Nestled along the River Rhine, this market boasts products from sixteen nations. The wonderfully decorated stalls, fantastic food, and quaint cobblestone streets will surely make this a top market for you in 2025. The Rüdesheim Christmas Market of Nations will be open from November 20 to December 23, 2025.

8) Strasbourg, France
The Strasbourg Christmas market, dating back to 1570, is the oldest and most revered Christmas market in Europe. Its historical significance and its annual attraction of nearly two million visitors make it a must-visit destination. With over eight different markets within the city, there is something for everyone. The Strasbourg Christmas Market will be open from November 27 to December 27, 2025.
9) Colmar, France
If you are planning to travel to Strasbourg, adding a stop to Colmar is a must. A 30-minute train or car ride away from Strasbourg, the Colmar Christmas market is spread around the old town, offering six different market experiences. At night, the timber homes light up in a spectacular display of Christmas décor. The Colmar Christmas market will be open from November 26 to December 29, 2025.

10) Karlsruhe, Germany
If you are in the Black Forest and want to see "Flying Santa," the Karlsruhe Christkindlesmarkt is for you. Every day at 17:00 and 19:30, Santa Claus and his reindeer fly across the market square. For great views from the top of the market, hop on their Ferris wheel, large enough for the whole family! They also have an large outdoor ice skating rink, and a dedicated Kinderland area located near St Stephen’s church. The Karlsruhe Christkindlesmarkt will be open from November 24 to December 23, 2025.
11) Ettlingen, Germany
Ettlingen, not to be confused with Esslingen, is another quaint market located in the Black Forest. If you don't have a chance to visit before Christmas day, this is one of the few smaller markets in Germany that remains open for a few days after the Christmas holiday. The Ettlingen Christmas market will be open from November 27 to December 28, 2025.
Quick Tips for Visiting the Christmas Markets
Wear comfy shoes
Wear layers and bring a hat, scarf and gloves
Bring a bag for carrying your purchases
Have cash on hand (especially in Germany as many vendors will only accept cash). In France, most vendors take cards.
The cold drains camera batteries and phone batteries quickly, make sure you have backups and a portable charger for your phone if you plan to be out all day.
If crowds are not your favorite, visit the markets during the day as the evenings get extremely busy.
